The world was first introduced to working-class warlock John Constantine in the pages of Swamp Thing Volume 2 Issue #37. Swamp Thing author Alan Moore asked his artist collaborators, Steve Bissette and John Totleben, what they would most like to draw, and both said they’d love working on a character that looked like the musician Sting (they had, in fact, put a non-speaking throw-away character in the background of Swamp Thing #25 with Sting’s immediately recognizable spiked blond locks and chiseled features on a lark).
